Chapter 18

Jillian didn’t have to work hard at pretending she’d never seen anything like the Broadway before. After all, even Kavya hadn’t been familiar with every single shop in the noisy, bustling district, nor had she ever gone shopping for American-style clothes, a commodity Jillian was beginning to believe simply wasn’t for sale there. Fortunately, antihistamines had been easy enough to locate at the pharmacy. Choosing the right shade of makeup had been much more difficult.

They browsed through the bazaar where Jillian picked out two Punjabi-style cotton nightgowns, complete with elephants printed on the border at the hem. The tunics and trousers were gorgeous, although far more colorful and ornate than anything Jillian had ever worn.

“These are very pretty,” she said. “But they’re so fancy. All I really need are some T-shirts and a pair of comfy jeans to wear with my nifty Irish sweater.”

Ranjiv chuckled. “The airline gave you more money to spend than that, didn’t they?”

“Well, yes, but I hate to waste it all on clothes. I’d planned to do some traveling and sightseeing too.”

“You might find more of what you’re looking for downtown.”

“Yeah, right,” she said with a snort. “I can really see myself going into Selfridges or Harrods for a pair of Levis. Don’t y’all have anything like a Wal-Mart here?”

Ranjiv’s reply took the form of side-splitting laughter.

Exasperated, Jillian stomped her foot. “Oh, come on. You know what I mean. Where do the plain ol’ Englishwomen buy their clothes?” For that matter, where was the Shanda entity when she needed her? Surely she would’ve known where to shop. Then again, perhaps Shanda’s aura only surfaced when the need to swim arose.

Mighty specific entity.

While Kavya’s essence had become fully integrated just as Anna’s had done, Shanda’s seemed to have faded entirely. Perhaps they would all fade in time. It wasn’t as though Jillian could ask an expert in psychic phenomena what to expect after such a transformative experience. For all she knew, she was that expert.

During the few moments Jillian took to debate the usefulness of her new auras, Ranjiv’s amusement seemed to have tripled.

Jillian’s lips twitched into a smile as a new thought took shape in her mind.

This is good for him. Keep him laughing.

Those words of wisdom could have originated with any essence she’d acquired, or even from the depths of her own psyche. She had only to look at Ranjiv to know the advice was sound. Once again, laughter changed him completely, endearing her to him more than anything else could have done, perhaps even more than his kindness or his gentlemanly behavior. While those traits were admirable, the evidence of his glee was quite charming.

“Careful now,” she cautioned. “Someone might mistake you for a nutter.”

“There’s a Marks and Spencer in east Ealing, and an ASDA in Hounslow,” he finally said after regaining a modicum of control. “Thought you’d done your research.”

“My research didn’t include replacing my entire wardrobe,” she said with a scowl. “And while I absolutely want to visit Harrods and Selfridges, I seriously doubt I’ll have the money to buy anything there.
